When it Comes to Kids,
Hunger and Malnutrition are
Global Issues

Hunger and malnutrition are often viewed as issues that exclusively affect children in developing countries. Nearly 35 percent of these children are underweight or stunted, and poor nutrition contributes to one out of every two deaths associated with infectious diseases among children under five. About 25 percent of preschool children in these countries suffer from a lack of proper nutrition, which can severely affect a child's mental and physical development.
A total of five million children a year die of hunger and malnutrition in every corner of the world – even right here in the U.S., where more than 13 million children go to bed hungry every day. Almost 12 percent of U.S. households are "food insecure" for economic reasons. One in every six American kids has limited access to the healthful, safe and nutritious foods he or she needs to sustain a healthy and active life. What’s more, school-age children regularly consume "a la carte" foods at school that are of limited nutritional value and that can even be detrimental to their health. This fact, combined with poor food choices at home and a decline in regular exercise, has led to an obesity rate of more than 17 percent among American kids ages 6 through 19 – one of the highest rates among developed countries. Paradoxically, hunger and obesity often go hand-in-hand when it comes to nutrition.
Hungry Children — and Those with Poor Nutrition — Simply Can't Learn
Extensive research has shown that there is a direct link between nutrition and school performance. Study after study has indicated that children who don’t eat enough healthful, nutrient-rich foods can’t learn at the same pace that properly nourished children can. One study by the American Heart Association concluded, among other findings, that:
- Undernourishment affects children’s behavior, their academic performance, and their ability to concentrate and perform tasks.
- Children’s brain function is lessened by short-term or periodic hunger or malnutrition caused by missing or skipping meals.
- Students who ate a nutritious school breakfast had better math and reading scores, increased attention, fewer nurse’s visits, and better behavior.
- Students who ate a healthful breakfast had a lower chance of becoming obese over time.
Simply put, students who regularly eat nutritionally well-rounded meals are more prepared to learn, more likely to attend school and classes, and more able to take advantage of educational opportunities. That’s why school nutrition programs are so important. These programs provide well-balanced and nutritious meals to more than 30 million students each day in America, and in doing so, they help to support academic achievement, fight hunger and combat childhood obesity.
