Paul R. Mathewson, Ph.D., Chief Science Officer

Dr. Mathewson joined NutraCea in November 2007. Prior to joining NutraCea he was a consultant to the food industry serving many sectors assisting companies in the areas of food formulation and processing and the use of enzymes in food applications. Dr. Mathewson started his career in the food industry in 1975 at the USDA USGMRL in Manhattan, Kansas where he was a research scientist in the Grain Structure and Composition unit. From USDA, he went to Nabisco Foods Group in East Hanover, NJ where he was Principal Scientist and Protein Group Leader in the Fundamental Science Research Group. He left Nabisco to become Director of Research and Development at Mrs. Field’s Cookies in Park City, Utah.

Dr. Mathewson has published over 35 research papers in peer reviewed journals and has eight patents both US and international. He was educated at the Virginia Military Institute (BS), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (MS) and Kansas State University (Ph.D.).

Dr. Patel has a strong academic and industry background, which includes a unique blend of research, public health, teaching and nutraceutical industry knowledge. She has a Ph.D in Nutrition, and her work on energy expenditure of Lactating Women is one of the first of its kind in the world. Her clinical research has been published in more than 18 peer-reviewed nutritional journals and her work is quoted in various textbooks on nutrition.

Dr. Patel has worked with the World Health Organization on the metabolic side effects of oral medications. At the Texas Department of Health as a Program Manager for the chronic disease prevention program in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control, she worked on national surveys like the Youth Behavioral Risk Surveillance and the Youth Tobacco Study. She also worked with the Cooper Institute on the energy expenditure of school students. She was the co- coordinator of the Continuous Quality Control Committee and taught CQI to TDH staff. She has won awards for her commitment to quality control and public health.

Her work with the FAO/WHO funded project on "Micronutrient deficiencies" won her the prestigious Sagarmal Goenka award. She has presented her scientific work at several international scientific conferences and was an invited speaker at the FAO/WHO/NIN sponsored conference on Micronutrient Deficiencies. She taught classes on world nutrition and hunger at San Jose State University. Before she came to NutraCea she worked at Matthias Rath Inc. in Santa Clara, CA. Dr. Patel is committed to preventive health and nutrition and has a certification in Ayurveda from the American Institute of Ayurveda.
